FAQ
Explanation of Values
The shading coefficient (Sc) represents the extent to which glass building materials affect the energy consumption of a building envelope. It is defined as the ratio of the solar transmittance (η) of a glass specimen to the solar transmittance (ηs) of 3mm clear glass (generally taken as 0.88 as a reference); the lower the shading coefficient, the less external heat the glass building material blocks from entering the building (Source: Green Taiwan Building Center).
- Evaluation criteria for the shading coefficient of energy-efficient glass: Sc value ≤ 0.35.
- Evaluation criteria for architectural window and door film materials: Sc value < 0.57.
Visible light reflectance refers to the proportion of visible light from sunlight that is reflected after striking glass building materials. The higher the visible light reflectance, the greater the degree of light pollution caused by the glass building materials (Source: Green Taiwan Building Center).
- Evaluation criteria for energy-efficient glass: Visible light reflectance ≤ 0.2.
- Evaluation criteria for window film materials used in building doors and windows: Visible light reflectance <0.20.
Visible light transmittance refers to the proportion of visible light from sunlight that passes directly through glass building materials and enters the interior. The higher the visible light transmittance, the greater the benefit of converting sunlight into effective indoor lighting (Source: Green Taiwan Building Center).
- Evaluation criteria for energy-efficient glass: Visible light transmittance ≥ 0.50.
- Evaluation criteria for window film materials used in building doors and windows: Visible light transmittance >0.60.
The thermal conductivity coefficient, also known as the k-value, is measured in W/m·K and is defined as the amount of heat transferred per unit area of a material per unit time under a given temperature difference. The evaluation criteria for building insulation materials are based on the standards of Taiwan’s Environmental Labeling Program and are set at a thermal conductivity coefficient of <0.044 W/m·K (Source: Green Taiwan Building Center).
Thermal transmittance, also known as the U-value, is measured in W/m²·K. It is defined as the amount of heat transferred through a unit area of a building envelope per unit time when the temperature difference between the interior and exterior is 1 K (Source: Green Taiwan Building Center).
- Evaluation criteria for exterior wall systems or structures: U-value < 1.8 W/m2 K。
- Evaluation criteria for roof systems or structures: U-value < 0.72 W/m²·K2‧K。
Key evaluation criteria for energy-saving coatings include solar reflectance (solar reflectance) and thermal emittance. The former is used to assess a roof’s ability to reflect solar radiation, while the latter is used to assess the efficiency with which a roof radiates surface heat into the external environment. The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) is a comprehensive indicator that combines solar reflectance and thermal emittance (Source: Green Taiwan Building Center).
- Criteria for evaluating energy-saving coatings: Solar reflectance >0.70 and SRI >80.
Glass Specifications
Low-E glass (Low Emissivity) is commonly referred to as “low-emissivity glass.” It is primarily manufactured using traditional methods, typically involving a metal coating to increase the reflection of infrared rays from sunlight, thereby reducing radiant heat and providing thermal insulation. The following is an introduction to two types of Low-E glass:
- Hard-coated: A metal coating applied to imported single-pane Low-E glass. Advantages: Can be used as a single pane, laminated, or bent. Disadvantages: Poor thermal insulation.
- Soft-coated glass: All Taiwan Glass products fall into this category. Advantages: Good thermal insulation properties. Disadvantages: Metal coatings oxidize when exposed to air and are prone to scratching, so most products feature a double-pane structure.
AIM Energy-Saving Glass is a Low-E glass that goes beyond traditional metal-coated glass. It combines “ceramic heat-insulating materials” with nano-light-filtering technology and the film-forming technology used in standard laminated glass (PVB interlayer). It utilizes standard glass lamination processes, equipment, and temperature control parameters, making it highly stable and reliable. Furthermore, because it contains no metal components, it does not oxidize and maintains its performance over the long term without degradation. Practical testing has demonstrated that it effectively enhances the value of residential properties and luxury homes.
First, we need to determine the intended purpose. The primary function of insulated glass is thermal insulation; think of it like a thermos. To prevent heat from escaping, it is widely used in cold-weather countries where indoor temperatures are in the low teens Celsius and outdoor temperatures are below freezing. Using insulated glass reduces indoor heating energy consumption and lowers carbon emissions. However, Taiwan is a subtropical country where the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors is less than 10 degrees. the primary factor affecting air conditioning efficiency is the direct penetration of infrared radiation from sunlight through the glass into the room. Therefore, by reducing the amount of infrared radiation that penetrates, we can achieve heat insulation, comfort, and energy savings. In this context, AIM Fengguang Energy-Saving Glass—which offers both high light transmission and high heat insulation—is the ideal solution for thermal insulation glass that truly balances indoor natural light and air conditioning energy efficiency.
- Infrared (IR): This is a heat source. The sensation of heat from sunlight is caused by infrared radiation; the more of it that enters a room, the hotter it becomes. If there is insufficient air circulation indoors, the room will feel stuffy and hot.
- Ultraviolet (UV) rays: These are silent killers. While UV rays in sunlight are imperceptible, over time they cause damage to organic materials—such as antiques, paintings, sofas, carpets, curtains, and other home furnishings—leading to deterioration, cracking, and fading; It also poses risks to the skin, including tanning, premature aging, and cancer. It is truly a silent killer that permeates our daily lives.
